By leveraging cutting-edge 3D scanning technology, we can now capture detailed and accurate digital representations of physical objects. These scans serve as the foundation for creating precise 3D models, enabling the production of intricate and customized parts.

What is 3D Scanning?

3D scanning involves utilizing a device to generate a three-dimensional model of a physical object. Similar to how scanning a document or photo creates a digital file in two dimensions, 3D scanning captures physical objects and reproduces them as manipulable or modifiable 3D models. Various technologies are employed in 3D scanning, including photogrammetry, laser scanning, contact-probe measurement, and structured light scanning. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, but all have the potential to produce satisfactory models depending on the quality of the system used.

Our SMARTTECH3D 3D scanner specializes in structured light 3D scanning, which has proven to be a highly accurate non-contact method for measuring objects in three dimensions. While most companies employ blue light scanning to achieve high-quality scans, SMARTTECH3D distinguishes itself by utilizing green light scanning. Their green light scanning technology has surpassed the quality and reliability of blue light scanning to such an extent that they have received a certificate of accuracy from the Laboratory of Coordinated Metrology through a stringent process of independent testing. This exceptional level of accuracy and reliability makes their scanners ideal for two popular applications: part inspection and reverse engineering.

How SMARTTECH3D 3D Scanner Works

3D scanning involves several steps to convert a physical object into a digital representation. First, a scanner emits lines of green light with varying widths onto the object and measures the distortion of the light to determine its surface characteristics. This data is then used to generate a point cloud, which is essentially a collection of points that describe the object’s surface. The point cloud can be refined by removing any inaccurate or noisy points.

Next, the point cloud is used to create a triangle mesh, typically in the form of an STL file, which is the standard file format for 3D printing. Although a scanned STL file can be directly printed, it is generally recommended to use the STL file as a reference in a CAD program to reverse engineer the object. This approach ensures the smoothest surfaces and the most precise dimensions for the 3D printed object.

SMARTTECH3D has created a software solution called SMARTTECH3D Measure, which simplifies the process of scanning, editing point clouds, and generating triangle meshes. This software is designed to make these tasks as easy as possible. For more complex reverse engineering and inspection projects, SMARTTECH3D also offers integration with the Geomagic suite of software. The addition of 3D scanning enhances the capabilities of our existing tools at R&D Technologies, providing an exciting complement to 3D modeling and 3D printing.
